What’s fascinating is that the glue on the tape has a similar refractive index to the frosted glass therefore allowing such an effect to occur.
Yes, and the said glue filling in all the irregularities are only on one side. Unless you know the specific pattern of the etches cut, it’s not unfeasible to guess that the effect only works one way.
After all, the person looking at you from the other side has no tape to fill in the irregularities, so the light hitting from that side is still refracted.
