This really sucks, and is a valid concern for riders out there on the road.
I have several problems with what happened here. Disclaimer: The rider is mostly faultless, I will criticize him in my analysis, strictly for academic reasons and not to belittle him. I truly hope he is OK.
Driver is completely in la la land. Not only are they running a red light, the center line was violated like a 17 year old girl on prom night. This driver didn’t have a fucking clue what was happening on this road. Notice that when the driver gets out of the car, after running around to the back (to do what?) he is talking on his cellphone.
The dark part of me has to assume that he was not on the phone with emergency services, reporting the accident he just caused and requesting immediate aid for the rider. Based on the time line and chain of events, I have to believe he was terminating the call with whoever he was talking to during the time he was crossing the centerline and running a red light. I think the conversation went like this. “Hey I am going to come over tonight and put my tiny penis into you. OH SHIT. (a few seconds of silence). Hey listen, I just got into a wreck so I have to go. No, No, I’m fine. . . Yes really, I’m fine. The other guy doesn’t look so hot. Seriously, I’ve got to go. OK. Yes, I’m fine, I promise. There is a cop coming. I’ve go to hang up now. OK, bye.”
Additionally, I do not know how things work in Asia, but after watching the video 20 times I am even more confident he was not on the phone with emergency services. If you call in an accident, they have LOTS of questions. You don’t just dial 911 and say “Hey I hit a bike, I am at Main and 19th, k thanks bye.” They want to know a shitload about your condition, the condition of the other party, and the condition of the scene so that they can appropriately triage and send the appropriate response. Questions like “are you in a safe location (i.e. the berm), are you injured, is anyone else injured, what is the condition of the vehicles”, etc etc etc. No fucking way that guy was on the phone with 911 Asia. No way.
So, I think we can safely assume the driver is an idiot and 100% at fault.
On to the rider.
I don’t know the area or this intersection, but based on the drivers speed and the surrounding traffic the rider appears to be going at least 10MPH too fast for the conditions and local speed limits. Maybe he is speeding, maybe not I don’t know. . . but I think he is. I speed more often than not so it’s hard for me to find fault here, but that is a factor in the accident.
Beyond the speed, watch the riders vehicle very closely. The rider NEVER touches the brake. The rider does jack shit actually. No brake, no weave, no roll off the throttle, nothing. In fact the only reason the driver ended up crashing into that enormous concrete mass was the momentum of the bike hitting it and pushing it that way. After locking it up the driver never swerved.
The rider had a green light. That SHOULD mean you are clear to go. But the reality is that it doesn’t, and that is clearly demonstrated here. No matter how “perfectly” the rider handled things here, I think there still would have been an accident. But, I do think that the results could have been significantly minimized here if the rider was more aware. By doing the following things, this severe accident for both parties could have turned into a “fender bender” for the driver and a wrecked bike with minimized injuries for the rider:
- Enter the intersection at or below the speed limit
- Check cross traffic in both directions well before entering the intersection.
- Get on those motherfucking brakes as soon as you recognize a problem. Again, from the riders perspective this accident was unavoidable, but a hard brake going into it would have made it more survivable.
So there is a lot here the rider could have done to make it better? Could this have happened to me? Absolutely. If you are a rider you should watch this several times. Even with a dumb ass driver, your safety is your responsibility. Don’t let this happen to you.
On to the cop. You sir, are a black mark on law enforcement, even by Asian standards and I hope you die a painful, fiery death. You are a piece of shit, and if one of the many cop friends I know were like you I would kill them and gladly do life in prison, just to know that I had made society better and safer for my sacrifice.
YOU JUST WATCHED A MAJOR ACCIDENT, CAR VS. BIKE AND THE RIDER IS HURT BADLY. I don’t know your native language sir, but I do hear you screaming something into your radio. I assume you are calling for a squad, hopefully a medivac. YOU RUN A SHORT DISTANCE, THEN STOP AND SAUNTER CASUALLY TO THE BACK OF THE CAR, AWAY FROM THE RIDER WHO MAY NEED *IMMEDIATE* AID, AND START JACKING OFF IN TRAFFIC???
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING? Traffic is controlled. Cars are slowing down and stopping. WHY AREN’T YOU CHECKING ON THAT CITIZEN WHO COULD BE DYING ON YOUR STREETS, PROVIDING IMMEDIATE AID AND RADIOING IN UP TO DATE STATUS?

The rider is flopping around quite a bit after the wreck, so we know that he isn’t paralyzed or brain dead. Wearing a helmet which is a huge plus. Can’t tell what kind of gear he is wearing, but no long slide so road rash isn’t a concern regardless. CE armor may have minimized some broken bones, but I think at least some significant injury is inevitable here regardless of what is worn.
I hope that the rider is OK and will keep him in my thoughts.
