After catching a huge fish, this bald eagle refuses to give up and swims across until he is able to get the fish out of the water.

he didn’t really have a choice. once he was submerged in the water, even the oil that protects his feathers from getting soaked wasn’t enough to get him back in the air. he was just too heavy.
That’s a good butterfly stroke right there.

I agree, that fish wasn’t too big for him, he just got wet. The fish probably dived last second and he went after it anyway.
I dont know anything about eagles getting wet, but cool bird, even with that design flaw.
Bald Eagles do not have retractable claws. He could not take his claws out of the fish and once he got wet he could not take off. Many eagles are drowned like this. The eagle tries to grab the fish close to its head so he can lift it out of the water. If he grabs it too far back the fish can sometimes get its head down and dive, dragging the eagle down.

There is another problem with most birds trying to take off from water - they can’t complete the wing motion required to lift themselves.
Water fowl have it easier because they have the feet and fat to raise them, temporarily, and sometimes by running on water Jesus-style, enough to gain momentum for lift-off.
