the diamonds aren’t actually a solid color, they are actually colored with a gradient going from lighter on the top to darker on the bottom.
the illusion occurs when your brain subconsciously compares the solid white triangles with the first row of diamonds, concluding that they are darker than they actually are. as you look down the paper the comparison isn’t as strong and it appears the diamonds are becoming lighter.
if you don’t believe this you can take a piece of paper, cut out the diamond shape and hold it against your computer screen to isolate the squares. you will see that each of them is actually identically colored with a gradient going from gray to darker gray.

easy. they are all shadowed, and at angles, so at the bottom they are brighter then get darker as it get higher, making them look like different shades. The best way yo think of it is as if they are all cut out black paper diamonds (like the mobile piece) all togtehr
the white at the top makes the diamonds at the top look darker.
