I live there, on the island. I guess that was on the Long Island Exspressway. I havent been watching the news lately, so i havent heard of this yet.

Ok, so i was right that it wasnt recent- it was in february. It was a school and obviously a dump truck that collided in a town called North Lindenhurst in Suffolk County. I dont live too far from there, either.

The driver was minding his own business when Dave dove head-first into his lap with his mouth agape. It’s scary though, this moron who thinks he really does know how to drive (samwise gamgee) is actually partly right. Partly. Lets delve into this truck accident first…
The truck driver here was way out of line as far as how he was operating that day. The gross weight of an average semi is not allowed to exceed 80,000lbs per federal regulations. This trucker was operating at 96,000lbs. If he had been pulled into a weigh station (for those of you who have never seen one, it’s like a rest stop, but state Dept. of Trans. works there SPECIFICALLY to weigh and inspect trucks for violations. Very few are open 24/7)…if he had been pulled into a weigh station he would have been found to be overweight. He would have been shut down on the spot and fined for the weight violation and would have likely been given a level 1 inspection which would have found the lack of tax permits (which dont matter in this accident) and the bald tires as well as a few other minor problems which exist on nearly ALL TRUCKS ON THE ROAD. But guess what, these trucks are still safer than 90% of cars out there. Anyway, the driver would not have been able to continue until 16,000lbs had been removed.
This driver was VERY unsafe. Many drivers run overweight from time to time, but usually not more than 5-6 thousand pounds.

Due to the unsafe manner in which he was operating the truck, with the bald tires and excess weight, I am of the belief the driver just lost control. The driver of the black car stated that all he noticed before the crash was traffic slowing down. This means the truck was in the process of braking. Probably pretty rapidly. A fully loaded semi is MUCH easier to stop than an empty one, but this is not the case when you have bald tires. Bald tires make it much harder to stop, period. So I surmise that upon trying to stop, the tires on the tractor lost traction and began to slide. Once this happens you can not control direction. When your steering tires have no contact with the ground, you easily lose the idea of what direction they are facing. He probably had the steering wheel turned slightly to the left and once the truck regained traction, it grabbed the road and went in the proper direction, causing the accident. THIS WAS NOT INTENTIONAL. This was a horrific accident.

While there are alot of RUDE truck drivers out there, I can say with almost total surety that almost 100% of truck drivers are better, more capable drivers than the average 4-Wheeled vehicle operator. 99% of truckers have to take driving classes to get their CDL. At the Dept of Motor Vehicles, the test we have to take is FAR more complicated than what you took to get that laughable Class C drivers license. Lets put it this way, can you parallel park your simple car? Probably not, most people actually have a hard time doing that mostly because it is no longer a very common skill. People who drive in big cities like NYC for instance can as there is alot of parallel parking, but the average driver has a difficult time doing this. Most truck drivers can parallel park their truck. Think about that, it’s a hinged vehicle, try attaching a small trailer to your car and then go parallel park it. Not easy. That is just a small example of the abilities of most truck drivers. Now, you dont often see a truck parking like this as it IS an unsafe maneuver. None the less it can be done.
Now, let me tell you this. Consider all accidents in the USA that involve semi trucks. Who causes 80% of the accidents? Do you think it’s the trucker’s fault 80% of the time? You do? Guess what, you’re wrong. Before lawyers twist the facts in court, the majority of accidents are due to the inexperience of the driver of a car. Look at your own driving in all honesty. How often have you cut right in front of a truck? How often have you changed lanes in front of a truck with only 20 feet or so between your rear bumper and the front of the truck? This is the most common issue. Cutting in front of a semi. THIS IS A VERY DEADLY ACTION. If you have to hit your brakes, the truck will smash over you without a second thought. Why? Because it takes so much distance to stop a rig moving at 60mph. Truck drivers are professional drivers. THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT THEY ARE ALL PERFECT. Just like some of you are incapable of driving safely, so are some truck drivers. Humans are humans, When we aren’t in a truck, we are in our car. Just remember that. Some of the time we are just like you.
As for some of the stupid stuff truckers do to some of you, such as cutting you off or shoving you off the road. That isnt due to inexperience. That’s just being rude. But often it is brought on by all of you. Alot of drivers get highly pissed off when they have to deal with the stupid driving of millions of people every day. Drivers who drive 5mph under the speed limit on a one lane road where we cant pass. Drivers who are slightly behind us until we turn on our lane change signal only to speed up and stop right next to us so we cant change lanes. OR the ones who ignore our blinker completely and dont move so we can change lanes. That is why some people get shoved out of the way. The majority of the time we changes lanes because we NEED to. We sit higher and see much farther ahead on the road than you do. Maybe we see a problem in the lane ahead or maybe we need to exit soon. If we have to keep dealing with people being impatient all day long we usually get annoyed. How do you feel in rush hour traffic? Are you ALWAYS relaxed? No, sometimes you get mad. Now, imagine being in traffic for 11-14 hours a day.
I don’t condone the actions of alot of drivers. It isn’t right nor is it safe. But you have to look at how it is from the other side. We ship your goods all over the nation. If trucks stopped running today, the economy would come almost to a screeching halt in less than 24 hours. All major stores get deliveries from big trucks. All small stores who get deliveries from small box trucks get their stuff from warehouses who get THEIR stuff from big trucks. While trains move alot of freight, how do you think the freight gets from the rail yard to the warehouses? Trucks are VITAL to the economy.
WE ALL NEED TO LEARN TO DRIVE SAFE AND SHARE THE ROAD. The highways are not yours and they are not ours. We need to share. Please be more careful around big trucks, you never know when one could lose control and take your life. I’m not trying to scare anyone here, I just want you all to realize that alot of the actions you take around big trucks could easily cause it to lose control. PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

I have a little “Rule” when I pass a semi, don’t switch into their lane until you can see the right headlight of their truck in your rearview mirror. its plenty of room no matter what.
Thats actually the rule you are supposed to use regarding every vehicle. Thank you for being one of the few who puts a decent amount of space in front of someone before crossing over.
A good rule of thumb is, if you dont know how much space is enough, just wait until you can see the whole front of the vehicle in your rearview mirror. At that point there is more than enough room, even for a semi.
