Well in their defense - the farmer who owned the plot of land needed to get rid of the colony anyway. Instead of just killing the ants, he called this team of scientists to get something productive out of it. So at least they got something beneficial out of this.

this is excellent information for the science community. it shows how a civilization can accomplish great things when it’s individuals share the same instinct to live for the good of the civilization as a whole.

it was for a scientific discovery to better our understanding for a species and their way of thinking. it is for a beneficial cause, it isnt like they were bored and decided to fill an ant colony in. would you rather that the scientists never did this and we never knew how complex an ant could be?
Basically this excavation will definitely help to understand and apply the ant techniques for betterment of humans in many ways, hope none of ants would have not killed never minding the damage to their construction.
May those who feel for the ant should build them an ant farm. In their bedroom. I’m sure the ants would say thanks for saving us..

vira, living things are precious but they are not equal. Let’s say you have a 1 year old son. If you baby is trapped in a burning house and I chose to save a young cockroach instead of your baby from the burning house, would you say I made a right choice? Is a human baby equal to a baby cockroach?
It’s too bad those amazing ant colony was destroyed, but as all living things, we are in competition with limited resources.
As greater and intellectually superior beings, we should be responsible to find ways to co-exist with all other living things in harmony. But it is not only foolish to say all living things are equal, it is irresponsible. As long as you live in human society, good of other fellow humans come before other living creatures.
One day, you may have a heart attack (or other serious medical conditions) and in desperate need of medical help. Most likely, a group of human doctors will save you life. A group of ants probably will not respond to your call for help.
I am an environmentalist and I respect all living creatures and their right to live. I do not endorse mindless killing of any living creatures. But that doesn’t mean I am blind to the fact that I value a human life above anything else. I hope someday, you too will think so.
