Actually this elephant is a member of the Thai Elephant Conservation which is a non profit organization that rescues already captive elephants (previously captured for logging and deforestation purposes) and houses them in a refuge in Lampang. One of the way funds are raised are through the paintings these elephants do. I’ve done a fair amount of research on this (as I originally had the same concerns as you) and it really is a legit foundation.
Also, I’d be careful calling people of a different ethnicity “bug/rice eaters.” It makes you sound like the “fat, stupid and ugly tourist” (and racist) you purport to dislike.
