That is not an AR-15, that is a modified M-16! The military cut the stock of the weapon down and added the sites for close quarter combat, I do believe the weapon is now called an M-14. But, by no means is that an AR-15. The barrel of the weapon is still rifled and the grips are the same as the M-16A2.
No it is NOT an M-14. Nor is it a machine gun. It is a semi-automatic rifle. It is a civilian version of the M-4, which is indeed an AR-15.
M-4 carbines are not available to civilians per the 1986 ban. Only fully automatic weapons made prior to that can be owned by civilians. Those weapons are difficult to own as they require the signature of either the sheriff or police chief where you reside and a federal $200 tax stamp. They also are very expensive. Average cost of a fully auto M-16 is about $18,000. Many semi-automatic civilian legal AR-15s have modified stocks and optics which make them look like to be M-4s.

Also, all variants of the Eugene Stoner designed rifle have “rifled barrels”. Only cheap, stamped sub machine guns would have unrifled barrels.
Rifling causes the bullet to spin as it passes through the barrel. This spin causes the bullet to stabilize, making accurate shooting possible.

The shortened AR variant you are refering to would be the CAR-15 (civilian model) or M4 (Mil version) The most easily recognizable feature to determine between the M16/AR15 and M4/CAR15 is the length of the barrel. A barrel length under 16 inches is considered a carbine, regardless of if it has a collapsible stock or not.
Lack of education on the matter of firearms is one of the major reasons their are so many negligent firearm injuries yearly. The ignorance in the matter really irks me.
When you are in, ‘the field’, you shouldn’t strip the bolt down into its various pieces because they are quite small and if you weren’t careful could be easily lost. The bolt can be properly cleaned in the field without being striped down so thouroughly. Assembling and disassembling for time are useless. The only things that need be done quickly in the field are loading and stoppage drills. Nobody cleans their weapon when they are on patrol. Why would I take my weapon apart if I could need it at any moment? Take your weapon apart only when you know you won’t need it.

I am a Firearms instructor as well as a former Hunter safety instructor for the State of Michigan.One of the best policies of gun safety is being familiar with firearms and the way they operate. I trained from 400-700 kids and adults a year to safely handle firearms. This girl and her father needs to be complimented on the safe way that they treat firearms. Firearms are tools that that can be used for hunting, safety, food, and fun. In the wrong hands they are deadly. This girl will always be a safe handler of firearms for the rest of her life.
