Some laptops do not have mechanical volume controls. For example… my gateway’s volume is controlled internally and is only accessible once Windows is completely started. This would be a great prank to pull on me!

A co-worker went one better and put in a sound that was 4 minutes of silence followed by a crazy clown song. It always just seemed to come out of nowhere, and he named the file “ding.wav” so you wouldn’t spot it looking through the Windows sound list. Ah, practical jokes.
Maybe worse/better:
I had a customer on the phone while troubleshooting his problem on my brand new Sparc-Station 10 when a coleague sent (through the network) the sound of a toilet flushing to my computer’s audio device - FLUSH!
…The customer didn’t miss a beat, “Boy, they sure work you guys hard over there, don’t they! They don’t even give you a bathroom break?”
I was VERY annoyed/upset, but had to hand it to the jerk who sent this; it was a fantastic prank.
