well the first problem is your thinking about this too LOGICALLY! basically the guy told it that must be “easy” so think of things that are easy to shoot if you had a gun in your hand. if you were to shoot a gun! an EASY target would be a fish in a barrel cause its DEAD and there is a whole barrel of them so if you miss one your STILL going to hit the one next to it. I.E. EASY! like the claim to making your techno music. Why would someone want to find a needle in haystack if they can just get another needle? same concept its not a logical recreation its just used to describe the degree of difficulty.

Well you are half right. There is no such language as American, but it is the origin that decides what the idiom is. The real question is does this phrase come from America or Britain? If there is nothing to suggest it is of American origin (and it certainly is a used phrase here in the UK) then it is illogical to assume it is American.
