This kid’s got a seriously bad dose of the teen yips, and as a (single) father of a teenage daughter, I know exactly what that entails. God knows how many times I have heard that comment “YOU’VE RUINED MY LIFE.” — not from my own kid, but from many of her spoiled rich friends. But this case is one of the worst I have seen. It’s very clearly parental neglect in terms of discipline. The brat should have had her arse smacked when she was young and taught that good manners are paramount (in the development of children). While I still have the occasional problem with my daughter, I believe she is evolving more quickly from the teen yips than her friends simply because I’ve constantly made her aware that we have to earn what we desire to have and to accept with good grace what we’ve got. One of her friends was also given a Lexus by Daddy Starbucks not so long ago, and I must admit it kind of hurt me because I’ve been driving a jalopy for several years in order to spend my money on my daughter’s education rather than try to foster our self-image (something that is very important here in materialistic Thailand). It has been difficult, especially when taking my daughter to her rich friends’ houses on my motorbike or in the jalopy. But at the same time I’ve been saving really hard, and yesterday I took delivery of the very first brand new car I’ve ever owned. The sacrifice of so many years has been worth it as we both appreciate the new car more than if I’d gone into debt earlier on and tried to keep up with the Joneses. In fact I feel better than the Joneses now because I own my car and am debt-free. My daughter has amazingly understood all of this and is now incredibly supportive of what we have. I love my daughter, and I believe she’ll become a better adult because of the lessons I’ve tried so hard to teach her.
