Nice hats.
I love the alternate ending, a LOT better.
whoah i definitely liked that one better
no way.. the first was better. I’m glad that was not the real ending.
I like how in the first one he sacrifices himself for the good of all of mankind. But this one definitely is less depressing the the original. I remember walking out of the theatre like UBer depressed and sad.
So thats the scene from the previews when that ugly ass zombie is right next to his face…
this is ones alot better i didnt like how will smith died at the end
the movie is based on a book so if they changed the ending it would have sucked
The ending is changed in the movie and the alternate ending. The way he dies in the book is much better than the movie. I did like the alternate ending though. The book, movie, and alternate ending are all good though.
Yeah, what Phear said. I would of preferred if they had did it the way that the book had the ending, which added much more meaning to the name itself and the ironic twist.
definitely liked this on better
better
No dude the one they put in the movie kick ass cause he gave his life to save mankind. KICKASS!!!
Ummm, less depressing, but stupid, because it kinda gives the meaning of disease ridden zombie away… Zombies don’t feel love, they feel for one thing… MEAT! So, yeah.
But they weren’t zombies
y didnt he help them
movie was good but sad
alternate was good but lame
but the movie had the hole ledgend thing to it good movie
Both shit endings.. shit movie.. The beginning was of the movie was good…
to tell the truth the second ending is more ‘complete’ but the first ending is the better ending
as i always say “legends never live to tell thier own tale”
This makes sense now. I saw the trailer, and wasn’t 100% sure what the story was about. I saw it a couple times to try to figure it out. They didn’t really say, or give away anything in the trailer for a change. In the commercial, they show this scene here, where the zombie dude wants to bite his head off but doesn’t, and just hisses instead. I didn’t know if this was some supernatural story or, zombies, or infected, or apocalyptic or what.
This is the ending I was expecting in theaters.
i did sorta like this ending a bit better, but i think it had less impact since will smith didnt die
I agree with Phear and WOW
I think both endings were equally fitting. I agree that it was a more complete ending, but as much as it sucks, I think him sacrificing himself is more dramatic, especially after working for years to cure the one thing that killed him. Irony makes for a good movie, and a better ending.
either way they both end up good
I’m gonna go with Bruce on this one. It doesn’t matter which ending was better, because the movie sucked ass anyway. It was way too corny for me. Has south park made fun of this movie yet?
what the hell, this ending is WAY better than the one in the movies!
Im not a huge fan of either endings, how did the book end?
In the original story Robert Neville just gets horribly killed and that’s the end of the human race, so both of these are an improvement as far as cinematic storytelling is concerned. But I prefer the one they chose for the film, it seems more poetic and meaningful, and more conclusive. Similarly to Braveheart and Gladiator, the deaths of the main character just adds to their greatness.
poop
the original is better, this one is good but original is awesome.
i’m the man, not u
Much like the original ending of the book, the other was just bullshit
This was a great ending. They werent flesheating zombies like in other movies. They still had human emotions. This also explains why they started coming after him so enthusiastically all of a sudden. They lived in piece for years, then once he takes one of their kind, they go ape shit.
I think this completely changes the film. We can see that the ‘zombies’ are still capable of feeling love/emotional attachment, that’s why the chief one is after Neville (Smith). Neville stole his wife/partner/girlfriend. Remember the chief zombie noosed Neville the same way Neville did to his partner. In this ending Smith recognises this humanity as he looks remorsefully at the faces of all the subjects he’s killed in his trials. This makes better sense of the listening for God substory - Neville hears God at the end and realises that the zombies are still human beings, despite their illness. I thought the original ending didn’t tie much up and was unsatisfying and yes, depressing. I prefer this one.
Well.. Both endings are fine..
but the damn dog shouldnt have died..
ruined the movie.
The original endin of the movie is much better, this ending is not realistic.
For those who want to know how the book ended:
Neville is eventually executed by the ‘vampiric creatures’. In his last moments he realizes that he now is a legend in this world; similar to the once legendary vampires from the past.
This alternate ending pays more respect to that theme … although I still think the movie shouldn’t have deviated so much from the original story.
Look at the Wiki page (or read the book) if you want to know more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_am_legend
Both of those endings bad. The movie is nothing like the book, which was awesome. I was entertained by the movie, but come on, once the chick and kid showed up it just went down the crapper.

at least in this one he freakin realizes that the two monsters were in love. in the other one, he acts like a blind retard

Both endings are disappointing. They should have stuck to the original ending from the Richard Matheson story. Instead they copped out and went with a couple of tired, old Hollywood endings that lack both depth and originality.
Atleast for the movie it makes sense now. But it misses the entire point of the book which is Neville has become the boogeyman to those who are infected. They are never shown and they never show the hardships Neville had to face to get to day 1001 including battling an island full of darkseekers. I wonder if this was done to keep fans from hating Will Smith.
People should start reading books, and Hollywood should stop bothering messing with literature. then we wouldn’t have to comment on this. Peace.
I really enjoyed the film but i think i would have preferred it to have this ending as it was much better. Also whilst watching the film i had assumed that they had gone after him because he had taken the woman after catching her in the net. This is when we first see the leader of the undead and his reaction told me straight away that it was his wife so i didnt understand why we weren’t shown this in some way like in this ending. I liked this ending and it made the rest of the film more coherent for me.
wasn’t that bridge that they drove away on blown up though….
this ending has a completely different approach!in my opinion(since i am an atheist) this is actually better!!
the original ending of the movie is highly religios since the protagonsit sees different signs which cannot be coincidence and thus, in the end, these sings make him believe in god. by finding his faith during the last minutes of his life, he is able to save the humanity.
On the other hand the film deals (same as e.g. novel Frankenstein by mary shelley) with the motif of hybris:
by trying to heal cancer, the humans are taking the role of god. death or sikcness is given by god. its his decision. but i guess its also a question concerning moral: how far can we go in science?
furthermore, experimenting on zombies is a continuation of this theme.
dude haris, shut the fuck up seriously no one wants to hear your rant
I kind of like the middle ground argument and that is not to be on the fence but that the alternative (or original ending that was cut) is far better than the aired one, but it should have had Neville being taken away and tried then killed to become the Legend who had been killing them. They were sentient in the two other forms of this story, the original book and The Omega Man (many ways a better movie). It was very nearly a fantastic movie but for Anna’s appearance and the infected cgi disasters
I like this ending, very happy. But that’s not the point of the movie. The movie was meant to bring out a sense of emotion, sadness most likely, but also a sense of honor. That one man can make a difference.
If he were to live, it would not be called, “I am Legend”, it would be called, “I am Alive to Take the Credit For Saving Mankind”.
Though a neat alternative, it doesn’t serve the movie the right purpose. I’m glad they didn’t use it.
BATTLE you don’t know shit. The movie was extremely different than the book, even the alternative ending. Book was way better, movie was simply mediocre.
First!
I like the real ending more than the alternative one because you never expect it. But the alternative is expected by everyone and most likable to happen, but when you shock people with the death of the main character that’s what make them remember the movie more than just having a regular happy ending.
I Prefer This Ending, Will Smith Lives
People who haven’t read Richard Matheson’s classic 1954 novella should stop trying to discuss it or compare it to this movie.
Please read the novella. Buy a copy at a bookstore, get it from your local library, or borrow it from a friend. “I Am Legend” is a timeless piece of science fiction genre literature. The movie and novella have little in common beyond the title and the main character’s name.
awesome alternate! waaay better!
The alternate ending did stay true to the book in a sense. At the end of the book Neville, and any other humans were now considered the outsiders. In the book as with the alternate ending as well, a new species has formed, capable of going on with their lives. As with both they don’t want a cure. They only want the old breed out of the way one way or another. Death in the book, to simply go away in the alternate ending. There are direct parallels.
I think if you took both endings and combined them, it would’ve been excellent. i liked both endings, the original ending left Neville looking like a hero, while the alternate left me with some question like, why is he now leaving Manhatten, it would seem now he has his foot in the door to a cure and some understanding of the dark seekers. I was thinking when they were driving off over the bridge that had amazingly been repaired after being destroyed earlier in the movie, that how will he continue his experiments unless he is near his experiment. Maybe he just decided to forget the whole thing marry up with this new lady and live happily everafter in this colony we saw in the first movie version. Whatever the case we all know that movies have and will leave alot to your imagination, and if you are still thinking about it after the credits have run and the TV is off, thats when you know the movie was and is good, mission accomplished.
aww i think both ending are ok personally i liked the first one better becuase its more like a legend jessi is right
quote:”If he were to live, it would not be called, “I am Legendâ€, it would be called, “I am Alive to Take the Credit For Saving Mankindâ€.”
but most importantly the movie will be waaaaaaaaaaaay better if the dog did’nt died that was really sad
hmmmm…THIS SUCKED!!! iliked the first one waaaaayyy better!
peace
UMMM.. EVERYBODYS FORGETTING ONE THING!!
HOW CAN THEY DRIVE AWAY ON THE BRIDGE AT THE END WHEN THE BRIDGE WAS BLOWN UP?? LOL
I like the one where he dies better. They both sucked though I hated the fact he died but I love the fact he lives but I still don’t like this ending. PLUS THE DOG STILL FREAKIN DIES I love that damn dog what a sad action horror depressing animal killing packed movie
Hollywood is full of shit.
Doctoring $torie$ to $pare dull mind$ and religiou$ drone$, that’$ what’$ going on here.
The first half or so of the movie was cool, but they fucked it up, as usual.
The point of this story is that the old world is finished: everyone, including “the last man” have to die.
The cute family has to die,
The cute dog has to die,
The surrogate family is a profoundly idiotic cop out,
The darkseekers are sentient,
And Neveille has to die in the end, hence becoming “the Legend”.
Hollywood fucks up everything it touches. This could have been good if they stuck to the original story.
By the way, “Omega Man” was NOT a good movie either, it may actually be one of the worst piece of shit ever commited to film.
At least Smith is better than Heston.
This is basically a whole new thing because it almost relates nothing to the actually book, also isn’t the main character in the book white and blond hair and shit lol? (just saying), plus it was called i am legend because he was the legend for the vampire people like vampires are legends for us.. I don’t like the alternate ending because its not very realistic.. such as why would the alpha zombie guy not just kill will smith afterwords and also wouldn’t will smith try to fix up Manhattan?, why is he driving away on a nonexistent bridge.. also would the car not blow in the series of explosions lol? and in the actual movie i did not think they were all coming after the will smith because of the girl, i just thought they wanted to beat the shit out of him. Also, they shouldn’t have killed off the dog and o yea wtf was up with him shooting the shit out of fred?.. why was fred there and who set that trap? was it that lady or what…
Fuck all of you who say this movie sucks. Go get a fucking life. Best Movie I’ve seen in a while.
Second ending was better cuz he didn’t die.
The bridge at the end is the George Washington Bridge which connects New Jersey to the Bronx. The blew up the bridges in and out of Manhattan.
second ending sucked nuts, corny and stupid…who cares if will smith died in the other one, it was way better still
this sucks
Amazing, the different ways all of you interpreted the film. I read the book years ago in high school, and just recently finished reading it again, after seeing I am Legend. The movie really DID NOT follow the book closely; however if I were to choose, I liked the first ending, not the alternative. Not to “piss off” all you atheists out there, but “no greater love has a man than to lay down his life for a friend.” Neville did this, and by the way,all of you mourning that beautiful dog–the dog also gave his life for a friend. And being the sappy Christian that I am, in my mind Neville heard his little girl’s voice, which made him fearless in the face of death–he knew he would soon be with her and his wife,(and Samantha, the dog!) and save humanity by protecting the cure he had finally developed. Yea, I liked the first ending best. Neville became the legend that saved mankind–brace yourself atheist readers–KINDA LIKE JESUS! Sorry, can’t apologize for that one.
I really don’t like either ending.
as everyone seems to concur, the first half of the movie was spectacular. But here are some things you have to look at, the infected are basically vampires but they really aren’t doing anything vampiry in the whole movie other than staying out the sunlight, but we also see that they are capable of using animals when the guy unleashes them on neville so from that its safe to assume they can set up a trap. What i think would have just been great is if they would have had dracula or something on the TV and have the woman dracula steals in her crypt and add in a line where someone calls dracula a “LEGEND”ary creature… instead of Shrek.
That way, when he had the infected woman with him and hte infected were at the plexiglass, they could have staged a flash backs and he would have though of that dracula scene and imagine this infected woman and himself as dracula, DUN DUN DUN. then stage flash backs of him murdering HUNDREDS of infected and flash back to dracula killing humans PARALLEL ALERT. that would have been much more fitting along with him realizing they are all there to get the infected girl back from the big bad “daywalker”.
I like the alternate ending more that the one they showed in theaters, but it would’ve been much better if they added will smith and the other two people showing up to that refuge town all together to the altenate ending.
[...] Voor diegenen onder u die de film I am legend nog niet gezien hebben zou ik niet verder lezen. Voor de gelukkigen die deze knappe film al wel gezien hebben is er nu een alternatief einde beschikbaar! Bekijk ‘m hier! [...]
Before seeing this ending, I liked this film…. After seeing this ending, I LOVE this film.
Amazing way to end a brilliant story
if he had sex with all those females he caught, the ending would have been way more interesting.
WTF, This was crap. Will Smith should die again.
THEY ARE NOT ZOMBIES!!! they are infected humans with a “KR” or “KI” or whatever it is virus. i dont like how the dog dies, but it kinda shows that after dedicating his life to finding a cure, he eventually gets everything taken away from him, and decides to sacrafise himself at the end of the original.

enjoi…
This made more sense, and a “happier ending”. I figured that they would’ve chosen this but I understand it would’nt live up the the title in a sense.
I love this one. The one in the movies was awfull and it made me hate the movie but its better that he lives.
I dont understand how him dieing made him a legend? how does him dieing in the orginial ending allow him to save mankind? he is a fool for not tossing the gernade and then getting in the shelter with the cure with the other two people…. that would of been legend.
srry for this but i think it was G.ay i
did not like it i like the one were he kill him self with the nade i think i worked out better that way
i think the origional ending has more of and understanding, because when Marley said “look daddy a butterfly” and then the woman had a butterfly on her neck and then the cracked door in the shape of a butterfly, it makes more scense. but i also like the alternate one because it kinda clams down a little
this ending was so much better.
This ending was better without a question.
improbable
Movie would have been good if dog didn’t die haha.
its funny how ppl refer to the theatrical ending as the “original” when this is the ending that the book had… so doesnt that make this ending the original?
[...] I just watched the alternate ending. I didn’t noticed they had bonus features on the DVD. Haha how ridiculous that I didn’t bother checking. Anyways, you can see online as well here: I Am Legend alternate ending I think I prefer the movie’s ending instead. I heard that the book had an ending that he died as well, but it was different. I thought the whole sacrificing his life to save others was a good ending. Very sad and depressing, but movies that give you major emotions are the best movies! [...]
how a man that do everything to live, kill him self, being i cientist, so inteligent, know that one GRANADE, cant kill all the “zombies”, a man like this will never kill himself, he will try at the last bullet live… if he does like the first ending, his family life was gone in vain.. FIRST ENDING goes against the caracter of the actor..
is a completly shit… im glad that they did a secound, but is not good enought for this type of history..
Well Robert(number 60) needs to figure out the movie before postin that, jesus.dont down it if u dont get it. incase you havent noticed, EVERY movie that is based on a book is different, not necessarily majorly but think of harry potter?
They make changes to appeal to more people, because if you’d read the book and knew the film was exactly the same, you would be less interested in seeing it. But if there are tweaks it interests people more.
I think the ending on the movie was amazing, because seriously, did he really have anything left to live for?His family died and most of the human race was wiped out.and THEN he found the cure.but if they’re doing an I Am Legend 2, then i dont think Robert should have died, thats the reason i like the alternate ending, because in the next movie, it would be nothing without will smith.
but seriously, anyone who thinks its a shit movie, get your head checked. its gotta be the among the best movies of this kind.(zombies n all that)
The GW bridge was the most ridiculous part of that ending. If Manhattan had been quarantined, that would be the first to get blown up. They could have left the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges up and just quarantined Long Island as well. The whole movie was badly mapped out. Moreover, it is unbelievable that a virus would rid us of ALL human emotions. This film left out key components and was complete rubbish.
The original book wasn’t a zombie story, it was a VAMPIRE novella! Really, the movie keeps the stereotypical vampire characteristics, but it made them crazy. This ending has some sembalence of the story though.
In the original, he gets executed. Right before he dies, he realizes that the vamps aren’t the minority or the freaks. He’s the minority, the freakish creature that poses a threat to vampirekind. He was the monster. The movie completely contradicts this by turning the innocent infected into freaks, giving cursed humanity a chance to survive and maybe retake the world and generally making it a run-of-the-mill monster movie. Why???
i like the original alot better…the movie was called i am legend for a reason. He was a legend for finding a cure and dieing in the name of it. If this was the ending what kind of legend did he leave…nothing…so the original was better because it signifies his legend with a good ending…not some crappy add on
they didn’t use this ending for a reason. It doesn’t make sense. For the whole movie they were building on the concept that the zombies have lost all human instincts … yet at the end he bargains and reasons like a businessman in love….
the alt ending was happier but the original was best for the movie.
wow that was a great ending and brought a better meaning to the movie even though they dont have a cure
and with this second ending will there be an I Am Ledgend 2
lame. the other one is way better.
The version shown above is actually the original, they changed it to give a more family orientated/wholesome feel.
The whole point in the film/book is that he is the legend, but not for the reasons we initially think, HE is the monster, the one who comes while you sleep and kills your children. This is hinted at throughout the film, by Anna looking at the photos in his lab and the intelligence shown the alpha male i.e the mind games.
In my humble oppinion the cinema released version was wishy washy, white picket fence shite that totally insulted the intelligence of the audience.
This ending was better, it’s just the pre-screening audience is retarded and wanted the crappy new ending that we all saw in theatres. (Bare in mind neither was great) This ending further explains how the vampires were sentient and using traps against nevell. It tried to hit on certain parts of the novella, but half-assed it, and the original ending botches everything the movie was working up to. As the few that actually understood the source material Nevell was “legend” as in the “vampires” saw him as we percieve vampires… legend and lore. He was supposed to be the last of his kind, then they started bringing other “normal” people in… Then I stopped caring.
