My cats would sit on my computer desk, and chase the images of birds on my screen, or even my mouse pointer.

actually, most animals wouldn’t have realized it was the same type of animal on the screen and on the couch. Dogs aren’t very smart, but they do understand things like that more than most animals.
A mutt, wolf, coyote or wild dog would never have done that. Some breeds have had all their intelligence bred right out of them. I imagine this same dog loves to fetch a stick repeatedly.
